Vocational Qualification in Restaurant and Catering Services

Waiter/Waitress

At Omnia you can study to be a waiter/waitress in English.  After completing the qualification, you will know how to work in customer service tasks at restaurants with different business ideas and missions or in public sector units. You will also learn how to present, sell, and serve food and beverages.
You have to be a team player to work in the field. It is important to work seamlessly with other restaurant staff. You will also need to be flexible in terms of working hours and work content. Good communication skills and good memory are a must. A waiter/waitress must enjoy working with people and be polite at all times. If you tolerate pressure and you are self-motivated and especially service-minded, you will become an excellent professional!

Future job opportunities

Waiters work in many different types of restaurants. For example in fine dining restaurants, chain restaurants, hotels, nightclubs or cafes - on land or at sea! The employment prospects for waiters are good and there is already a significant shortage of skilled staff. Many waiters are also employed through staff leasing companies.

Future study opportunities

After graduating you can study further in the field and obtain a further vocational qualification and/or a specialist vocational qualification. You can also apply to universities of appliened sciences or universities.

Minkälaisiin tehtäviin valmistun?

Tarjoilijat työskentelevät lukuisissa erityyppisissä ravintoloissa. Työpaikkoja voi olla mm. fine dining -ravintoloiden ohella ketjuravintoloissa, hotelleissa, yökerhoissa tai kahviloissa – maalla, merellä tai ilmassa!

Tarjoilijoiden työllisyysnäkymät ovat hyvät ja osaavasta henkilöstöstä on jo huutavaa pulaa. Monet tarjoilijat työllistyvät myös henkilöstövuokrausyritysten kautta.

Studying for a vocational qualification in English will improve your language skills and grants you eligibility for further studies in university or university of applied sciences.

Student admission criteria

The Finnish and English written language tests are arranged on 21.11.2019. The Finnish and English oral language tests will be arranged on 27.11.2019.

Please note! Applicants need to pass both the written and oral language tests inorder for their applications to be processed.

The applicants will be invited to language tests (Finnish and English) by email.

The studies will start on January 2020. Personalisation for the studies is organized before the beginning of the studies.

Duration of studies depends on the student's basic education and the progress of the studies.

Implementation of studies

The qualification includes full-time studying at Omnia as well as on-the-job learning periods.

Content of studies

The degree includes vocational, optional and common units.

Vocational units, 85 competence points:
Working in catering services, 20 competence points
Customer service and sales, 25 competence points
Serving plated dishes and beverages, 40 competence points

Optional units, 60 competence points:
Serving à la carte dishes, 30 competence points
Selling and serving beverages, 25 competence points
Café services, 10 competence points
Street and fast food services, 10 competence points
Serving for catering services and special occasions, 25 competence points
Planning business, 15 competence points

Common units, 35 competence points:
Communication and interaction competence, 11 competence points
Skills in mathematics and natural sciences, 6 competence points
Citizenship and working life competence, 9 competence points

Other information

International students must have a valid health insurance and accommodation for the duration of their study in Finland. Omnia does not offer dormitories.
